Kenneth Mungara, a name familiar to Toronto road racing fans, has narrowly bettered his own world masters record in the marathon at Australia’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon on Sunday with a time of 2:08:42. His previous record, set in April in Milan, was only two seconds slower. The Kenyan, at 41, is the winningest athlete to ever race the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, having won the event four years in a row from 2008 to 2011. “I know I can go faster again in the future and will keep training hard. When you run at this age, you have to plan ahead and keep working,” said Mungara after the race. The win in Gold Coast is also an Australian soil record, meaning the fastest record ever run in the country. Japanese runner Risa Takenaka won the women’s race in 2:28:25.
